TSRI Ranks Among Top Institutions Globally According to Nature Index

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) ranked #11 among institutions worldwide of all sizes and types—academic, government and commercial—in terms of articles published in the leading journals Science and Nature in 2013, according to the first edition of the Nature Index 2014 Global, a Nature supplement designed to provide insight into global hotspots for high-quality research. Other analysis, based on data from the previous calendar year, also highlighted TSRI’s strengths in chemistry and life sciences.

Jessica Sheu-Gruttadauria Wins Heart Association Fellowship

Jessica Sheu-Gruttadauria, graduate student in the MacRae lab, has been awarded an American Heart Association (AHA) research fellowship, designed to help students initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research.

The AHA fellowships support research broadly related to cardiovascular function/disease and stroke or to related clinical, bioengineering or biotechnology, basic science and public health problems, including multidisciplinary efforts.

Sheu-Gruttadauria’s research, “The Structure and Mechanism of Higher-Order microRNA-Induced Silencing Complexes” focuses on elucidating the structural and mechanistic elements underlying the assembly of higher-order silencing complexes that mediate miRNA repression, providing tools to probe the role of miRNA regulation in cellular and  cardiovascular disease processes and thereby facilitating targeted design of miRNA-based therapeutics.

Tom Kodadek to Speak at January 14 Faculty Lecture Series

Tom Kodadek, chair of the Department of Cancer Biology, will speak on “Chemical Tools to Monitor and Manipulate the Proteome” at the next Faculty Lecture Series presentation, Wednesday, January 14. The Lecture will begin at 5 PM in the Timkin Amphitheater in the Green Hospital in La Jolla, California. A reception will follow in the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Building, first floor. For further information, see the Faculty Lecture Series webpage. The lecture series is supported by an endowment from the Cochrane-Cartan families, established by TSRI Professor Emeritus Charles G. Cochrane.

Alumni Symposium to Feature Doctoral Program Graduates

Featuring the careers and accomplishments of TSRI Doctoral Program graduates, the Second Biennial Alumni Symposium will be held on Friday, January 16, from 8:30 AM to 7 PM, in the Beckman building’s Galleria and Keck Auditorium at Scripps California.

The event will offer presentations and a panel discussion by TSRI’s graduate program alumni who now work in positions in industry, the government and academia. Presenters will include:

  • Erica Ollmann Saphire, TSRI, Class of 2001.
  • Ian Thorpe, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Class of 2006.
  • SusAnn Winbush, GlaxoSmithKline, Class of 2011.
  • Peng Wu, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Class of 2006.
  • Nicole Kresge, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Class of 2001.
  • Steven Bischof, Chevron Philips Chemical Company, Class of 2013.

“The Alumni Symposium offers postdocs and student a chance to network with our alumni and create those connections that may provide an inside track to job offer,” said organizer Mike Matrone, program coordinator for Career and Postdoctoral Services. “This event also helps foster a community among our alumni and maintain a TSRI relationship with them.”

Other symposium activities include an alumni and graduate student luncheon and a 5:30 PM networking reception. RSVP is required for the luncheon.

Open to the public, the symposium is presented by Career and Postdoctoral Services and the Graduate Office.

FL-NWiS Launches New Speaker Series with Yale Professor Anjelica Gonzalez

Scripps Florida Network for Women in Science (NWiS) will launch a new Female Speaker Series with a presentation by Anjelica Gonzalez, Dubinsky Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Yale University, on Thursday, January 8, at 4 PM, in room B158.

Gonzalez will speak on “Engineered Human Microvasculature: Composite Cellular and Matrix Structures Regulate Leukocyte Recruitment.” Her research focuses on the development of biomaterials for use as investigational tools, particularly for the investigation of immunological responses to inflammatory signals from endogenous and exogenous sources. Named one of NBC’s 10 Latino Innovators in 2012, Gonzalez was recently awarded Yale’s 2013-2014 Provost’s Teaching Prize. A winner of The Hartwell Foundation Individual Biomedical Research Award, she also was a speaker at the Newsweek/Womensphere Emerging Leaders Global Summit in 2011.

NWiS will host an informal discussion hour with Gonzalez over lunch, noon to 1 PM, in the Founders Room. RSVP to NWiS coordinator Briana Weiser at bweiser@scripps.edu or (561) 228-2444.

CA Blood Donors for Research Offered Cash Compensation

TSRI’s Normal Blood Donor Service (NBDS) seeks new donors to meet an urgent need for normal human blood products used by institute investigators on the California campus. Donors are immediately compensated $25 to $100 for a single blood draw.

The NBDS donor pool is open to all healthy individuals in the TSRI community who are readily available during working hours. Potential donors must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: 18 to 65 years.
  • Weight: at least 110 pounds (50 kg).
  • Blood pressure: between 90 to 180 mm Hg systolic and 50 to 100 mm Hg diastolic.
  • No major surgery within the past six months.
  • Adequate hemoglobin test scores.
  • Negative screening for HIV and Hepatitis B and C, upon entry to the program and every subsequent year.
  • No daily use of aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication.

Further details, including applications to become a paid donor, are available at the NBDS website. NBDS Coordinator Priscilla Crisler can be reached at (858) 784-5418; by fax, (858) 652-5556; or email, corelab@scripps.edu
