In 1977, the research arm of SCRF became the Research Institute of
Scripps Clinic, and Frank Dixon was named its first director. According
to the figures released by the NIH in 1985, the institute was one of
the largest private, non-profit biomedical research centers in the nation
in terms of support from federal research grants. The development of
the anti-leukemia drug 2-CdA, which now cures or produces many years
of freedom from hairy cell leukemia in almost all those receiving treatment,
was among the first major scientific and medical achievements to come
out of the institute. Above is an aerial view of the Torrey Pines Mesa
in 1988.
