By 1970, the thriving program was expanding so rapidly that the facility
in downtown La Jolla was running out of laboratory space. Fortunately,
in 1971, the Dow Chemical Company gave SCRF 13.2 acres of undeveloped
land on the Torrey Pines Mesa. With the help of a major construction
grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the support of
private donors, a new facility was completed in 1976. Left: Julie Nixon,
