The Scripps Research Institute

In 1991, the institute became an independent corporation—The Scripps Research Institute. Richard A. Lerner was named the president of the new entity. Throughout the 1990s, Scripps Research scientists continued to make major breakthroughs in chemistry, immunology, neuroscience, structural biology, molecular medicine, and other fields. The number of investigators and support staff continued to grow to more than 2000.

In 1996, The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology was established with a major gift from the ALSAM Foundation. Also in 1996, The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Chemical Sciences, a five-story, 165,000-square-foot facility named after its key funding contributor, opened its doors.
