Ben Shen, TSRI professor and co-chair of the Department of Chemistry, will continue the Faculty Lecture Series on Wednesday, March 8, with a presentation titled “Natural Product Biosynthesis: Inspiration for Chemistry, Enzymology, and Drug Discovery.”
The lecture will begin at 4 PM in The Committee Lecture Hall in the Skaggs/Molecular Biology Building (MBB2N), followed by a reception in the Beckman Building first-floor galleria.

Kelvin Chan, Deputy Manager of Investments at EDBI, is the featured guest at the next Scripps California Meet the Alumni event, scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, from 4 to 5 PM in the CA Graduate Office Dining Room.
Chan was a graduate student at TSRI from 2010 to 2015. While here, he studied organic chemistry in Jin-Quan Yu’s lab and founded the Scripps Consulting Club, a student-run organization that provides students and postdocs with the training and resources needed to pursue business in science as a career. Following graduation, Chan joined EDBI, based in Singapore, where he focuses on medtech and healthcare IT portfolios. He is also a board member at the JR Biotek Foundation, a nonprofit that provides STEM education, training and laboratory capacity building programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

The next onsite immunization clinic on the California campus will be held Wednesday, March 22, from 9:30 to 11 AM, in the Hazen Theory Building, rooms 203/205. Appointments are not needed. Conducted by Sharp Rees-Stealy staff, the clinic will provide hepatitis B vaccinations free of charge to all TSRI employees. Environmental Health & Safety Occupational Medicine must pre-authorize all other procedures based on the employee's working conditions. These procedures include tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccines and other titers, immunizations and procedures.
To receive consideration at the next TSRI Institutional Biosafety Committee, registration documents must be submitted to Environmental Health and Safety by Friday, March 24, via email to rachellv@scripps.edu. The meeting will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2:30 to 3:30 PM, Building 3301, P2 conference room.
Applications for the spring cycle of postdoctoral travel awards offered by the California Society of Fellows (SoF) are due Friday, March 24, midnight, Pacific time.
The goal of this initiative is to provide TSRI postdoctoral associates an opportunity to present scholarly activities at a scientific national or international conference. Up to three $1,000 travel grants will be awarded to full-time California campus research associates to cover conference-related costs (e.g., travel, housing, registration). A committee of TSRI postdoctoral fellows and non-scientist representatives will review the applications.
Postdocs who have yet to attend a meeting to present their current work, previous applicants and those with outstanding financial need are encouraged to apply in this round of grants; past travel award winners are not eligible. Eligibility, specific application procedures and proposal guidelines can be found on the travel award webpage. Applications can be submitted securely online.

The San Diego Symphony will present “Mozart Up Close,” a program featuring Orion Weiss on piano and musicians of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, on Tuesday, March 14, at 7:30 PM.
