Sunitha Rangaraju Awarded Muscular Dystrophy Association Grant

Sunitha Rangaraju, a research associate at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) has been awarded a three-year development grant from the Muscular Dystrophy Association for her project, "Improving ALS phenotypes by targeting aging pathways."

Muscular Dystrophy Association development grants are awarded to “exceptional postdoctoral candidates who have the best chance of becoming independent researchers and future leaders of neuromuscular disease research,” according to the association’s website.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neuromuscular protein aggregation disease that progresses with age. Rangaraju, who works in the Petrascheck lab, will study whether small molecules that delay aging could also delay or improve ALS-like symptoms in worm and mice models.

Library Tip: Not the Corresponding Author? Thinking ‘Not My Problem’? Not So Fast

If you have NIH funding, you already know that qualifying NIH-funded articles must be deposited into PubMed Central. But did you know that for any published paper that arose from your NIH grant—even if you are not the corresponding author, even if you are not an author at all!—you still are ultimately responsible for ensuring its deposit? If it is not deposited, your funds may be put on hold. NIH officials have announced they may begin enforcing this policy more strictly starting this Spring. (See "Upcoming Process Change”.)

The corresponding author typically initiates the required submission of an article to PubMed Central. But if the corresponding author has not, or is unable, to fulfill this role, it may put your funding in jeopardy. Now there is a mechanism to allow you to assume control and complete the steps required to fully comply with the NIH policy and protect your funding.

If the publisher (on behalf of the corresponding author) has submitted the author manuscript version of your paper to the NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) System, and the manuscript has been assigned an NIHMS ID, you may follow the progress of the submission when you log into the NIHMS System at http://www.nihms.nih.gov with your eRA Commons/NIH log-in and password. Notes regarding the status of the manuscript can be found in the "In Process" or "Attention" tabs. If there has been inaction (if steps have been left unattended), there will be a button that will allow you to request that the manuscript be reassigned, enabling you to complete the steps required to obtain a PMCID (PubMed Central ID number).

If you find your manuscript is not listed in the NIHMS account, you may need to contact the publisher or obtain the peer-reviewed version of the author manuscript and do the submission yourself, depending on the copyright agreement with the publisher.
