Meet the Alumni: Christopher Reyes of Eclipse Therapeutics

Christopher Reyes, co-founder / chief scientific officer for Eclipse Therapeutics and former Scripps Research postdoctoral fellow, will be featured at the next Meet the Alumni Fireside Chat presentation, scheduled for Tuesday, July 10 at 4 PM, in the Faculty Club Library on the California campus.

A San Diego-based biotech, Eclipse Therapeutics pursues the discovery and development of therapeutics targeting cancer stem cells and other forms of cancer treatment. Reyes earned a BA in molecular and cell biology, and biophysics at the University of California (UC), Berkeley and a PhD in biophysics from UC San Francisco. Prior to founding Eclipse Therapeutics, Reyes worked in molecular discovery for Biogen Idec.

Sponsored by the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and the Network for Women in Science, the Meet the Alumni Fireside Chat series features a casual setting and discussion format, covering such topics as career influences, transitions, and options. Light refreshments will be served. Contact the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office to register for the event.

New CA NWiS Leadership Elected

The Scripps California Network for Women in Science (NWiS) has elected new members of its executive board:

  • Chair: Krystalyn Hudson, research associate in the Nemazee lab
  • Administrative officer: Daniel Murin, graduate student in the Erica Saphire and Ward labs
  • Public relations officer:  Laurie Gay, graduate student in the Felding-Habermann lab
  • Web manager: Gareth Morgan, research associate in the Kelly lab
  • Financial officer: Felicia Hernandez, research associate in the Gallay lab

In addition, Ryan Wheeler and Michael Matrone from the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office serve as advisory board members.

Reaching out to other organizations with similar goals is a top initiative for the new board.

“We have plans for an aggressive outreach program to connect with other women-focused groups in the San Diego region, e.g., Association for Women in Science – San Diego Chapter (AWIS-SD), Connected Women of Influence, and Hera Hub,” Hudson explained. In particular, the NWiS board plans to explore outreach opportunities with AWIS-SD, such as the San Diego Science Festival, “to serve as a positive influence to students in pursuit of a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,” Hudson added.

Other NWiS plans include building upon its monthly Coffee Hour gathering with relevant, broadly appealing topics, presenting joint events with the Society of Fellows and ScrippsAssists, and updating its “Scripps 101” event for new and current graduate students.

A support system and resource center for women and men, NWiS partners with the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office to provide networking and career preparation opportunities. For additional information on NWiS events and programs, visit the NWiS webpage or contact Hudson.

Library Tip: PDF Scanning for Articles and Laboratory Notebooks

Article and laboratory notebook scanning is easy at the Kresge Library, which operates two copiers that can scan paper articles to PDF files and email them directly to the user. Directions on how to scan to PDF are posted on the wall above the copiers. The library also has an overhead scanner to create larger PDF files from laboratory notebooks. Library staff members are available to provide a brief document-scanning training session. For more information, contact the Kresge Library Help Desk at (858) 784-8705 or helplib@scripps.edu.

2011 Healthcare Spending Account Deadline: June 30

Saturday, June 30 is the deadline for employees participating in the Healthcare Spending Account (HCSA) during the 2011 plan year—and who have a balance in their 2011 accounts—to submit all claims for reimbursement to UMR. Claims incurred by March 15, 2012, can be submitted under the 2011 play year.

Employees who participated in the Dependent Care Spending Account (DCSA) during the 2011 plan year must also submit DCSA claims by June 30 to UMR for the 2011 plan year.

UMR claim forms are available on the Scripps Research benefits website. For additional information, contact Benefits Administration at 858-784-8487 or via email at benefits@scripps.edu

Office of Counseling and Psychological Services Hosts Conference

The Scripps Research Office of Counseling and Psychological Services recently hosted the 2012 “California Employee Assistance Programs in Higher Education” conference in Del Mar. The theme of this year’s three-day conference was “Self-Care,” and Daphne Lurie, director of Scripps Research Counseling and Psychological Services, gave a presentation on “self-compassion.” Participants included representatives from Stanford University, University of California (UC) Berkeley, UC San Diego, California Institute of Technology, and UC San Francisco.

Reminder: Register for Scripps California Golf Tournament

Signups are due Saturday, June 30, for the 17th Annual Scripps California Golf Tournament, to be held Thursday, July 26, from 12:30 to 8 PM at The Vineyard in Escondido.

The $60 per-person tournament fee includes green fees, warm-up/driving range balls, and BBQ dinner. Thirty-six four-person teams will play in the scramble-format tournament. Team slots are available on a first-paid, first-play basis and are open to family or friends, but must include at least two Scripps Research employees. Individual team indices/handicaps must total at least 40. Less-than-full foursomes and single players may be matched to complete a team.

The tournament again honors a former friend and colleague with the Jared Purton Memorial Spirit Awards. “This year, the spirit awards will go to those who best represent Jared’s homeland of Australia. If you can play a whole round of golf in a kangaroo costume, you have a good chance of winning,” said event organizer Todd Maxwell, safety officer with Environment Health and Safety.

Team application forms are available at http://intranet.scripps.edu/california/sports/golf_flyer.pdf. For additional details, contact Maxwell at (858) 784-9566 or toddmax@scripps.edu.
