Nearly 200 high school students, representing 23 schools from across the country, recently spent a day at The Scripps Research Institute as part of a national presentation of SMART Team (Students Modeling Research Topic) projects. The students were presenting their year of work in the SMART Teams program, which gave them the opportunity to work with research scientists to design and construct physical models of proteins investigated in the scientists’ laboratories.
The students’ Scripps Research visit included a scientific presentation by Professor Ian Wilson (a long-time supporter of SMART Teams on the California campus), lab tours, a practice poster session, and an ice cream social. After their day at Scripps Research, the students displayed their posters at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) annual meeting in San Diego, April 21 to 25—the fifth time SMART Teams have participated in the meeting.
The teenagers enjoyed their visit to the institute, according to Marisela Chevez, Scripps Research education outreach coordinator. “As I walked around, we heard one student say that being at the ASBMB meeting would be ‘anti-climactic’ after their day at Scripps Research,” she said
Students from High Tech High School were among the 23 SMART Teams from
across the country that visited Scripps Research last month. Team members practicing
their poster presentation skills included (left to right) Emma Heutigg, Robert
Ramirez, Connor Kelly, and Karen Hernandez. The team worked with the Stout lab
with teacher Parag Chownhurry, a former Scripps Research postdoctoral fellow.
