Ben Shen Named AAAS Fellow

Scripps Research Institute Professor Ben Shen has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a distinction recognizing scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.

As part of the AAAS Chemistry section, Shen was elected a fellow for “distinguished contributions to the understanding of the complex mechanisms of polyketide and nonribosomal peptide antibiotic biosynthesis,” according to the award announcement. Research in the Shen lab centers on the chemistry, biochemistry, and genetics of the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and natural product-based drug discovery and development.

New fellows will be presented an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin during the 2012 AAAS annual meeting in February in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
