"The Pittsburgh Five"

The clinic changed little in size or scope until the 1950s, when the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation (SCRF) was formed from Scripps Metabolic Clinic to encompass a more vigorous research program.

In 1960, immunologist Frank J. Dixon led a group—including four other investigators, seven postdoctoral fellows, and 20 supporting staff—from the University of Pittsburgh to establish the SCRF Department of Experimental Pathology.
