The clinic changed little in size or scope until the 1950s, when the
Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation (SCRF) was formed from Scripps
Metabolic Clinic to encompass a more vigorous research program.
In 1960, immunologist Frank J. Dixon led a groupincluding four
other investigators, seven postdoctoral fellows, and 20 supporting stafffrom
the University of Pittsburgh to establish the SCRF Department of Experimental
Pathology. Left to right, front row: Charles Cochrane, Joseph Feldman,
