TSRI Interns Win Science Fair Prizes
Six students who worked as interns at The Scripps Research
Institute (TSRI) last summer, were among the award winners
of the 49th annual Greater San Diego Science and Engineering
Fair held last month:
- Reinhart Arquiza of Mt. Miguel High School, who interned
in the Carragher/Potter lab, won first place in Behavioral/Social
Sciences,
- Amy Leff of Helix High School, who interned in the Abagyan
lab, won first place in Biochemistry and the Association
for Women in Science Award,
- Greta Granstedt of Mt. Miguel High School, who interned
in the Harper lab, won second place in Botany,
- Angel Nguyen of Mt. Miguel High School, who interned
in the Han lab, won first place in Medicine and Health and
the U.S. Forest Services Award,
- Christine Nguyen of Mt. Miguel High School, who interned
in the Bruce Beutler lab, won first place in Microbiology,
- LaRena Woods of Mt. Miguel High School, who interned
in the Pan lab, won first place in Zoology.
Sharpless to Speak in Faculty Lecture Series
Nobel laureate K. Barry Sharpless, professor in the Department
of Chemistry, will speak on "Chemistry in Search of Biological
Function," as part of the Faculty Lecture Series on Wednesday,
April 9, at 5 PM. The event will be held in the Valerie Timken
Amphitheater, Scripps Clinic, 10666 North Torrey Pines Road.
Seminar on AAAS Fellowship in Science and Technology Policy
Are you interested in the interaction of science, technology,
and government in the United States and around the world?
Would you like to participate in the public policy-making
process of the federal government? The American Association
for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology
Policy Fellowship Programs provide opportunities for postdoctoral
to mid-career scientists and engineers to contribute to federal
decision-making in Washington, D.C., while learning how government
works. A seminar will feature two former fellows: Ashwin Vasvada,
Ph.D. in Planetary Science, Congressional Fellow, 2000-2001;
and Elizabeth Wadolkowski-Gordon, Ph.D. in Microbiology, Diplomacy
Fellow, 1990-91. The event will be held in the Valerie Timken
Amphitheater, Scripps Green Hospital, on Tuesday, April 15,
from 2 to 3:30 PM. For more information about the fellowship

Mail Order Prescription Program Reminder
Benefits Administration would like to remind TSRI employees
about the prescription plan through AdvancePCS, which
enables them to use the AdvancePCS Mail Order Pharmacy.
This mail order option is a quick and easy way to fill prescriptions
needed on a regular basis. Employees can receive a 90-day
supply for the price of a 60-day supply—$30 for brand
name and $14 for generic medications. Mail order prescription
forms may be obtained from AdvancePCS, Human Resources,
