In Brief
Students from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces
Visit Campus
The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) hosted a one-day
symposium about basic research on April 12 for students of
the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), an educational
institution established to study national resource management.
TSRI speakers included: Assistant Professor Benjamin Cravatt,
Associate Professor M. G. Finn, Professor Steve Kay, Vice
President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies
Jeffery Kelly, and Executive Vice President Arnold LaGuardia.
The students, who are either military officers or government
officials, are completing a Masters program designed to prepare
them for senior management positions in the United States
Department of Defense.
ScrippsAssists Hosts Ice Cream Social
Did you know that if you are an employee of TSRI you are
already a member of ScrippsAssists, the employee volunteer
club? And, as a member of ScrippsAssists, you are invited
to celebrate National Volunteers Week with an ice cream social
in the TSRI cafeteria on Wednesday, April 25, from 12:30 to
2 PM. Perhaps you donated items for the Senior Holiday Basket
Project, or helped maintain the trail at Torrey Pines Reserve.
Maybe you meant to get involved with ScrippsAssists but just
haven't been able to find the right project or the right time.
In any case, you are invited to celebrate volunteerism with
delicious build-your-own ice cream sundaes. This is an opportunity
to find out what ScrippsAssists has been up to, learn what
projects are upcoming, and contribute your ideas on new activities
for the group. Come by and meet the members of the ScrippsAssists
Steering Committee, have some ice cream, and celebrate volunteerism!
A Look at TSRIs Vision Plan
Benefits Administration would like to remind participants
in TSRI medical plans that the vision plan is offered through
Medical Eye Services (MES). The coverage is as follows:
- One routine examination per 12 consecutive months,
- Up to $110 toward frames per 24 consecutive months,
- One pair of standard lenses OR up to $100 toward contact
lenses per 12 consecutive months.
Vision plan participants need to bring an MES claim form
when attending routine eye exams or purchasing eyewear. A
$10 co-payment is required at the time of annual services.
MES packets are available in Human Resources. The packet
includes an MES claim form, an MES provider directory (which
lists ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians), and
a fact sheet. If you have questions or would like an MES packet,
please contact Benefits Administration, x4-8487, or e-mail
benefits@scripps.edu.

Discover the Power of Acrobat
Have you wondered what Acrobat is all about? At TSRI,
some people use Acrobat to fill in online documents, such
as grants, performance evaluations, and job requisition forms.
Acrobat can also be used as a tool for a collaborative editing
effort where the edit reviews are performed online, perhaps
cross-platform. Acrobat can also be used to build interesting
and interactive documents and "kiosk" style presentations.
One handy feature of the full program is Acrobat Catalog,
which creates powerful keyword searches for one or many documents.
Acrobat training will be offered in three sessions: Acrobat
Basics, Annotating and Enhancing PDF Files, and Distiller
and Catalog. Acrobat Basics is a prerequisite for the other
two classes. The Basics class will cover the following topics:
- Explanation of the work area and toolbars,
- Navigating a document,
- Minor editing and reordering pages,
- Creating bookmarks and links,
- Converting a Word document using PDFWriter,
- Building a simple "fillable" form.
The first Acrobat Basics course is scheduled for Tuesday,
April 24, 8:30 to 11:00 AM. If you would like to learn more
about Acrobat and complete the prerequisite for the other
classes, go to http://www.scripps.edu/rc/training/signup.html
or email training@scripps.edu.
