Professor Hongkui Deng, a well-known virologist and stem cell biologist, received his Ph.D from UCLA. As a postdoctoral fellow with Dan Littman, Dr. Deng made the seminal discovery of the co-receptors for HIV (Deng H. et al., Nature 381, 661-666; Nature 388, 296-300). Since moving back to China in 2001, Professor Deng has continued his virology research that is generously supported by Grand Challenges in Global Health program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Professor Deng has also become a leader on human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and is on the board of directors of International Society for Stem Cell Research. In a series of Cell Stem Cell papers, Dr. Deng's group recently reported the generation of iPSCs from rat and monkeys, and documented their potential uses in human disease research. His group also made the ground-breaking discovery that tumor suppressor p53 suppresses the induced pluripotency, a finding that was confirmed by five Nature papers published six months later. His group is one of the first groups to differentiate human ES cells and iPSCs into pancreatic beta cells for cell replacement therapy of diabetes.
