Snapshot: Jared Machado

Title: Controller

Duties: Overseeing the production of financial and management reports, budgets and forecasts and to ensure that strong financial controls and processes operate throughout the institute. Managing the Scripps Research finance team.

Started at Scripps Research: January 2010

Background: Machado grew up in Huntington Beach, California, and earned an accounting undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego. After graduation, he went to work in the external audit department of the public accounting firm Deloitte. During the following 10 years, Machado worked on a number of Deloitte client projects, which included the Deloitte audit team of The Scripps Research Institute. Prior to joining Scripps Research, he worked in Deloitte's Santiago, Chile, office for 15 months.

Current Goals for the Finance Department: Automating processes, producing more timely reports.

Thoughts on Scripps Research: "Being familiar with the institute over the past 6 years, I have always respected management and was impressed with the world-class research."

Hobbies: Machado enjoys roller hockey and spending time with his wife, Christina. He plans to "attempt to play golf" soon, since he now works near the Torrey Pines Golf Course.
