Researchers have found that small molecule targeting of histone deacetylase-7 (yellow) in the cell's nucleus leads to altered chromatin modification and subsequent strengthening of the proteostasis program. Treatment of human lung cells with the drug leads to enhanced export of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (green) to the cell surface with a concomitant increase in ion channel function.
