A Unique Opportunity
The Research Education Program in La Jolla, California, now in its 20th year, received some 10 applications from local high school students for every position available. The 25 high-achieving students chosen, many of whom are the first in their families to be headed for college, researched topics from DNA to influenza in Scripps Research labs.
"This year's program was an extraordinary success," says Marisela Chevez, the program's director. "Our 19 application reviewers selected focused, hard-working students who took full advantage of this opportunity and delved right in."
Two teachers also participated in summer internships at Scripps California.
