This image illustrates a model for HIV transmission via langerhans and dendritic cells. Cell-free HIV binds to dendrites of Langerhans cells and/or dendritic cells protruding from the genital epithelial surface. HIV can either infect dendritic cells and Langerhans cells (cis infection) or can be transferred by these cells as infectious particles to T- cells (trans infection).
