New La Jolla Lecture Series Reaches Out to Institute's Donors and Friends

As part of its effort to spread the word about The Scripps Research Institute, the Office of Philanthropy is launching a series of intimate lectures by Scripps Research faculty addressing such topics as Alzheimer's, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

"We want to share the groundbreaking work of our scientists with the institute's donors and friends," says Wendy Scott Keeney, vice president of philanthropy in California. "All the lectures, which will take place on our picturesque La Jolla campus, will be followed by a question and answer session and reception, so participants will have plenty of opportunities to interact with the speaker."

The free series, called "Lab Notes: An Inside Look at Scripps Research," will feature talks on:

  • "Alzheimer's Disease: Effective Treatments on the Horizon?" by Jeffery Kelly, Lita Annenberg Hazen Professor of Chemistry and dean of graduate and postgraduate studies, on Thursday, November 29, 2007, from 2 to 3 PM
  • "Cancer Immunotherapy: Using the Immune System to Destroy Cancer," by Professor Ralph Reisfeld on Thursday, January 24, 2008, from 2 to 3 PM
  • "Malaria Research: Battling a Global Epidemic," by Associate Professor Elizabeth Winzeler on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, from 10 to 11 AM
  • "Current Research and Developing New Treatments for Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke: On the Front Lines of Hope" by Professor John Griffin on Thursday, March 20, 2008, from 2 to 3 PM
  • "The Inner Frontier: Understanding the Human Brain," by Nobel laureate Gerald Edelman, chair of the Scripps Research Department of Neurobiology, on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, from 10 to 11 AM
  • "What in the World can Algae do for You?" by Professor Steven Mayfield, associate dean of graduate and postgraduate studies, on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, from 10 to 11 AM

In addition, Scripps Research scientists in both Florida and California are available to make presentations to community groups, either on campus or elsewhere. This service is called "Scripps Speaks."
