Reactive intermediates can be stabilized and isolated in a synthetic receptor, according to new work by the Rebek lab. Small amines are bound in a cup-shaped receptor and positioned near an aldehyde function. Reaction occurs to give a reactive hemiaminal featuring a new asymmetric center (shown in gold).
