In Brief

SOF Hosts Fall Research Symposium

The Scripps Research Institute's Society of Fellows (SOF) welcomes faculty, staff, and students to this year's Fall Research Symposium, which will be held Thursday, September 28 on the La Jolla campus. SOF symposia provide a venue to learn about the most exciting campus research projects as presented by junior scientists. This fall's presentations encompass topics including chemistry, chemical biology, structural biology, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, molecular and experimental medicine, and the neurosciences.

In total, 64 abstracts will be presented during an oral session (Keck Amphitheater, 12:30 - 4:30 PM) and a poster session (Beckman galleria, 4:30 - 6:30 PM). Additionally, keynote lectures will feature Professor Eric T. Kool of Stanford University, speaking on "Building a New Genetic System from the Ground Up" (Keck Amphitheater, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM), and Roger Y. Tsien of the University of California, San Diego/Howard Hughes Medical Institute, speaking on "Building Molecules to Spy on Cells and Tumors (Keck Amphitheater, 2 - 3 PM). Abstract presenters in both the oral and poster sessions will be competing for cash prizes for best presentations.

Free Flu Shots
The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla will be offering free flu immunizations for employees and graduate students on Wednesday, October 4 and Thursday, October 5, from 9 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:15 to 4 PM. Pneumonia immunizations will also be available at a cost of $40 (cash or a check made out to "HealthFax, Inc."). The clinic will be held in Room 205, Building 3377 North Torrey Pines Court.

October 4 and 5 are the only dates the immunizations will be given to employees and graduate students on the La Jolla campus. Employees who cannot make these clinics can call the flu shot hotline at 1-877-358-0202 (beginning in October) for the times and locations of other flu shot clinics in the area. Keep in mind these clinics are not free, and the providers are not associated with the Scripps Research medical plan provider, CCN. You may also contact your primary care physician to receive a flu shot. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Benefits Administration, x4-8487 or email benefits@scripps.edu.

Library Tip: New Electronic Access to Liebert Journal Package
The Kresge Library is pleased to announce electronic access to a package of journals from Liebert publishers. The library ran a successful trial of these journals in the spring of 2006 and many were heavily used. The new titles to which Scripps Research has access are: Journal of Computational Biology, Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, Viral Immunology, Rejuvenation Research, Stem Cells & Development, OMICS: A Journal of Integrative Biology, Hybridoma, and more. To access these journals visit Ellen or the journal list. For more information, contact the Kresge Library Help Desk, x4-8705 or helplib@scripps.edu.
