One in Four The Research Education Program in La Jolla, now in its 16th year, receives some four applications from local high school students for every position available. Many of those selected are students who are one of the first in their families to be headed for college or educators who teach in schools with culturally diverse student populations. "We have a wonderful group this summer," says Marisela Chevez, who directs the program. "It has been a pleasure seeing the interns grow as people and as scientists." This year's participants include (clockwise from top left): Ed Bustamante-Murphy, Emily Nguyen, Kevin Li, and Sindana Ilango. |
