"Augmented Reality" Scripps Research Ph.D. candidate Alexandre Gillet presented another popular visualization tool from the Olson lab. The system, called "augmented reality," uses a simple digital video camera to capture the image of an object, which is then tracked in an artificial computer environment. An educator who reviewed the booths for the Educational Fair's planning committee was particularly impressed: "[This] really cool computer interaction with physical models… could show abstract properties like charge distribution and electrostatic fields with ease. These concepts are typically very difficult to visualize and explain to students, but the computer visualization made it really clear, and really simple." |
