Robert Murphy
Title: Senior Vice President and General Counsel.
Duties: Acting as chief legal officer for The Scripps Research Institute. Interacting with the Board of Trustees and senior executives. "The existing legal resources at TSRI are excellent, with highly knowledgeable individuals who know how to do their jobs."
Started at Scripps Research: August 2005. "I'm glad to be part of the team."
Background: Graduate of Loyola Marymount University and the University of San Diego School of Law. Worked for law firms and publicly owned corporations. These included health care companies FHP International Corporation and Sun Health Care Group, and, most recently, a software and internet technology firm Tickets.com, which he helped to sell to Major League Baseball. Lots of trouble-shooting experience in high-pressure environments.
Philosophy: "I take the work seriously, but not myself."
Why He Came to Scripps Research: "I was intrigued by Scripps. It offers me an opportunity to work with some amazingly talented people."
Initial Goals: "To learn as much as I can about the institute. Eventually, I hope to use my experience in the for-profit business world to help build the financial resources so that investigators can continue to do great science."
Extracurriculars: Murphy is an "outdoors person," who enjoys the mountains and distance running.
