Bank of America, San Diego, Supports Teacher Interns
In a brief ceremony on August 13, the Bank of America, San Diego, gave The Scripps Research Institute a check for $20,000 to support teachers in the 2004 Summer Research Internship Program.

"We're grateful to Bank of America, San Diego, for its continuing support," says Jennifer O'Sullivan, director of the Scripps Research Education Outreach Programs. "This summer experience can make a real difference in the quality of education the teachers can provide when they return to their classrooms."

Teachers in the intensive, hands-on eight-week internship program conduct basic biomedical research in a laboratory under the supervision of a Scripps Research scientist. The program emphasizes the scientific process, research planning, bench experience, experimental design, data analysis, and interaction with laboratory personnel. As an adjunct to their day-to-day responsibilities, teachers attend specially designed programs and field trips throughout the course of the summer.

Other supporters of the 2004 teacher internship program are Bank of America, Palm Beach County, and the John and Susan Diekman Endowment.

Attending the ceremony were: Bank of America's Robert Villareal and Paul Tuomainen; teacher interns Lourdes Rueda-Lizzaraga, Bryan Berg, Rebecca Raden, and Ann-Marie Wellhouse; and Scripps Research's Roz Hodgins and Keith McKeown.

Hot Paper: Kolb-Sharpless Publication
Chemistry and Related Science Spotlight reports that an article by Scripps Research Associate Professor Hartmuth Kolb and Professor K. Barry Sharpless was the second-most requested article online during the first quarter of 2004. The article, entitled "The growing impact of click chemistry on drug discovery," was published in Drug Discovery Today (2003), 8(24), 1128-1137. The most-requested paper, "Suzuki Cross-Couplings of Unactivated Secondary Alkyl Bromides and Iodides," was authored by MIT's Jianrong Zhou and Gregory Fu—a Sharpless lab alumnus.

Walk the American Heart Walk
A team from Scripps Green Hospital, Scripps Clinic, and Scripps Research will be participating in the American Heart Walk, Saturday, September 18. Employees, volunteer, family, and friends are welcome to join the team in Balboa Park on the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) or one-kilometer course. Proceeds from the walk benefit the lifesaving research and education programs of the American Heart Association. The $20 registration fee includes a Scripps Team T-shirt. Registration forms are available from Ryan Wheeler, x4-9740, or from the registration booth after 6 AM on the day of the event. Opening ceremonies begin at 7 AM; the walk, at 7:30 AM.

Calendar Office to Begin Accepting 2005 Reservations
In the fall, the Calendar Office will begin the two-part process of accepting 2005 Scripps Research conference room reservations.

RENEWALS: From Tuesday, September 7 to Friday, September 24, the Calendar Office will accept the renewal of standing reservation renewal requests. If your lab or group has a standing reservation for a particular Scripps Research conference room, you MUST renew it if you plan to keep the same day/time in 2005. Standing reservations in 2004 will NOT be rolled over to 2005 automatically. If the Calendar Office does not receive a renewal request for a particular time/day slot by Friday September 24, that slot will be open for new/individual reservations.

NEW OR ONE-TIME RESERVATIONS: Beginning October 1, the Calendar Office will accept one-time and new standing reservations for 2005. Reservations are first-come first-serve. Sorry, one-time and non-renewal requests cannot be processed prior to October 1.

To submit a room reservation, complete the form at http://www.scripps.edu/calendar/calendarform.phtml. If you are renewing a standing reservation, put "RENEWAL REQUEST" in the "Additional Notes" box. Please allow three to five days for confirmation. After receiving a confirmation, double check the online calendar to make sure your information is correct. English-as-a-Second-Language Class Begins
A new series of English-as-a-Second-Language classes has begun. Instructor Cassandra Wadkin's class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 PM every Tuesday evening in the Immunology Building West Conference Room. The price for three months (12 classes) is $60.

Each intermediate-level English class is divided into speaking and listening, idioms and vocabulary, and reading and writing. If you would like to improve your English and your understanding of your friends and colleagues, movies, television shows, and the news, this class is for you. The class uses movies, games, television shows, grammar books, songs, drawing and novels to teach standard American English. Have fun and learn English at the same time!
