Scripps Research Hosts First Recruitment Day
By Mika Ono
The road to becoming a professional scientist is a long
onetypically involving four years of college, five years
of graduate school, and three to five years of postgraduate
training. And then, there's the job search.
To help with this last critical step from postdoc to professional,
The Scripps Research Institute will host the First Annual
IndustryScripps Research Recruitment Day on Wednesday,
June 9. The event is part of a larger effort, spearheaded
by Associate Professor Luc Teyton, to enhance the postdoctoral
experience at the institute.
The Recruitment Day will bring hiring managers and human
resources personnel from four companies to campus to speak
with postdoctoral fellows and graduate students at the institute.
The companies are:
- Amgen, a biotechnology company that develops therapeutics
in the areas of metabolism/nephrology, oncology, inflammation
and bone diseases, and neurology.
- AstraZeneca, an international biosciences firm, which
has research and development operations in Boston, produces
ethical pharmaceuticals and agricultural and specialty chemicals,
and supplies healthcare services.
- Agilent Technologies, a designer, manufacturer, and provider
of electronic and optical test, measurement, and monitoring
instruments, systems, and solutions.
- Novartis, an international firm that develops products
in the areas of pharmaceuticals, generics, consumer health,
eyecare products and medicines, and animal health.
In addition to responding to questions, representatives
will present an overview of their firms, discuss career opportunities,
and give details of their companies' recruitment efforts to
each audience.
The Amgen (noon to 12:30 PM), AstraZenteca (12:30 to 1:30
PM), and Agilent Technologies (1:30 to 2:30 PM) sessions will
be held in the Keck Amphitheater of the Beckman Building and
are open to all Scripps Research graduate students and postdocs.
The session with Novartis (2:30 to 3:30 PM) requires pre-registration,
and has already filled.
"Based on the feedback so far, we expect the event to have
good attendance," says Ryan Wheeler, program assistant with
the Scripps Research Counseling and Postdoctoral Services
Department. "The session with Novartis filled about a day
after we announced it."
Before their presentations to postdocs and graduate students,
company representatives will meet with Teyton and several
other Scripps Research faculty members. They will discuss
the institute's career efforts for postdocs and graduate students
and these young scientists' employment potential.
For more information on events, resources, and services
for Scripps Research postdocs, see the new Postdoctoral
Services web page, which now includes job postings, a
calendar of events, information on training seminars, other
career resources, benefits information, and links to Scripps
Research postdoctoral groups.
