Emily Holmes

Title: Vice President of Research Services

Duties: Supervising core facilities and other services for The Scripps Research Institute. In La Jolla, these services include environmental health and safety, nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray crystallography, flow cytometry, protein sciences, DNA sequencing, animal resources, antibody production, DNA array, mass spectrometry, microscopy, and fermentation. In Florida, Holmes is helping to establish regulatory services and other resource facilities for scientists. "This new position is a natural progression of the institute's growth here and expansion to Florida," says Holmes.

Education: B.S. in Zoology from Colorado State University; Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles; postdoctoral fellowship at The Burnham Institute (previously the La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation); J.D. from University of San Diego School of Law.

Professional Licenses: Member of the California State Bar; registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Started at Scripps Research: 1991. From 1994 until the recent promotion, Holmes held the position of associate patent counsel. More recently, along with patent work, she has participated in regulatory compliance. "The new position, though, is more about science than law. I'm putting my 'Ph.D.' hat back on."

Goal in the New Position: "To ensure that research services both here and in Florida are efficient, user-friendly, and responsive to the needs of the institute."

Favorite Part of the Job: "The challenge!"

Family Life: Holmes lives with her husband, Scripps Research Associate Professor Bruce Torbett, and their two boys, eight-year-old Ian and six-year-old Eric. Pets include a dog, Scout (who likes to accompany Holmes on her morning runs), and two of the kids' former school projects—a green tree frog, Hoppy, and an anole lizard, Camo. "Kids keep you young."

Extracurriculars: In addition to arranging and attending social and athletic activities for the boys, Holmes enjoys spending time with her "mom friends," bike riding with her husband, and taking family winter skiing and summer hiking vacations.
