Wüthrich to Speak in Faculty Lecture Series
Scripps Research Institute Guest Scientist Kurt Wüthrich, winner
of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, will speak on "Viewing Proteins
with NMR Eyes" on Wednesday, January 28 as part of the series. The lecture
will be held at 5 PM in the Valerie Timken Amphitheater, Scripps Clinic,
10666 North Torrey Pines Road.
A Public Science Education Seminar Series For Women
Scripps Research is offering "Second Cup of Coffee," a public science
education series for women who are lifelong learners interested in exploring
the scientific process, building vocabulary, and gaining the skills to
better comprehend and analyze contemporary science/health-related issues
and news.
The first session will feature Professor Jeffery Kelly speaking on "Advancements
in Women's HealthFrom Lab Bench to You, " on Tuesday, March 2 at
The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, 2000 Spindrift Drive, La Jolla. Breakfast
is scheduled from 8:30 to 9 AM, the presentation from 9 to 9:45 AM, and
questions, answers, and comments from 9:45 to 10 AM.
Series participation, which costs $60, includes:
- Four continental breakfast events in 2004;
- Presentations by leading Scripps Research scientists focusing on
health-related topics of particular interest to women;
- Up-to-date analysis of contemporary science/health-related news;
- Opportunities for in-depth discussion, questions, and answers;
- A community forum environment where you will meet interesting people
and gain scientific knowledge;
- Cutting-edge information. Hear the latest news before you read it
in a newspaper!

Stress-Reduction Through "Meditation in Everyday Life"
Psychotherapists Norma Jean Deak and Diana Shimkus will lead "Meditation
in Everyday Life," an eight-week program focusing on the tools of mindfulness-based
stress reduction, on Mondays from 6 to 8 PM, beginning on January 26 and
continuing until March 22 (with the exception of Monday, Feb. 16, Presidents'
Day). The program will also include one all-day session on Saturday, March
13, from 9 AM to 3 PM. "Meditation in Everyday Life" aims to increase
participants' awareness of their own stress reactivity and assist them
in developing life strategies that will improve their health and wellbeing.
The cost for the class is $395. Note the Scripps Research United Behavioral
Health Plan can offset this cost (call the instructors for pre-authorization)
and payment plans are available. The class will be held in the Molecular
and Experimental Medicine Building, first-floor multi-purpose room. To
