GABA, one of the major inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain, modulates dopamine and glutamate neurotransmission as shown in this drawing. In depression and nicotine dependence, there is evidence that GABA receptor activity and GABA neurotransmission are altered. This, in turn, may alter the neurotransmission of dopamine and glutamate that would further affect emotional states and tobacco smoking. |
