Roecker Wins ACS Predoctoral Fellowship
The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) graduate student Anthony Jon Roecker
of the Nicolaou lab has won the ACS Division of Medicinal Chemistry Predoctoral
Fellowship Award sponsored by Pfizer Global Research and Development.
As a recipient of the award, Roecker is invited to present his research
at the national ACS meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in August.
Snyder Receives BMS Fellowship
Graduate student Scott Snyder of the Nicolaou lab has won a 2003 BMS Fellowship
in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. According to Bristol-Myers Squibb, fellows
are chosen based on "demonstrated academic and research achievements and
their potential for significant future accomplishments." As a fellow,
Snyder is invited to the Unrestricted Grants in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Symposium hosted by Bristol-Myers Squibb in the spring.
Traffic Alert
Traffic delays are expected between La Jolla and TSRI due to a construction
project to begin shortly and last approximately 18 months. To improve
the sewer system serving the Torrey Pines Mesa, the City of San Diego
will install new sewer lines from the western end of The Salk Institute
to Torrey Pines Road, then south to Gilman Drive. The sewer lines will
be installed in the northbound lanes of Torrey Pines Road, and traffic
will be diverted to the southbound side of the road in segments during
the construction. Work will be performed from Monday through Friday, 8:30
AM to 3:30 PM.
Financial Awareness Week
Human Resources would like to remind TSRI employees that the fifth annual
Financial Awareness Week is Monday, July 7 through Friday, July 11. Presentations
by representatives from various financial and other retirement organizations
will address issues relevant for those who are just starting to plan for
a successful financial future as well as those nearing retirement. Refreshments
will be served and prizes raffled at each presentation. For more information

Toastmasters Elect New Officers
The SOS (Scripps Outstanding Speakers) Toastmasters group has inducted
new officers for the term of June 2003 through December 2003. The newly
elected officers are:
- Jon Medel, president;
- Editha Bornales, vice president of education;
- Kazunobu Kato, vice president of membership;
- Lisa Pasak, vice president of public relations;
- Kathy Spencer, secretary;
- Valerie Moreau, treasurer;
- Romyr Dominique, sergeant-at-arms;
- Tina Montgomery, immediate past president.
Visitors are welcome to attend Toastmasters meetings, which are held
the first three Tuesdays of each month, in the conference room on the
third floor of the Beckman Building. For more information, visit the SOS

Call for 2003 Scientific Report Cover Art
The Office of Communications is now accepting submissions for artwork
for the 2003 Scientific Report covers. Artwork is needed for the
front, inside front, and inside back covers. Submissionswhich should
consist of a print (such as a Fuji color print) of the artwork plus a
description of what it is, and whose lab the work was done inare
due Friday, August 8 and should be sent to Jann Coury, TCP-20 or email
jcoury@scripps.edu.
Don't Miss the Eighth Annual TSRI Golf Tournament
Join TSRI's 8th Annual Golf Tournament at 1 PM on Thursday, August 14.
The tournament, to be held at the Carlton Oaks Golf & Country Club in
Santee, will offer trophies and prizes to the top teams, doormats (last
place), closest to the pin, and longest drive. The tournament consists
of a four-person scramble, with only 144 spots available upon a first
paid, first play basis.
Each team must be comprised of at least two Scripps employees. If the
event becomes overbooked, preference will be given to Scripps employees.
However, in years past, family and friends were accommodated when possible.

be sure to include your extension and mail code. Registration forms should
be returned, with a check for $60 per person payable (in full) to TSRI,
no later than Friday, July 18. Please submit only one registration form
per team. You are welcome to form your own team, but it is not required
in order to register.
TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, Serum Draws, and Tetanus
Vaccinations
On Monday, July 7, Wednesday, July 9, and Friday, July 11, personnel from
Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to conduct TB screenings,
Hepatitis B immunizations, serum draws, and tetanus immunizations. The
clinics will be conducted at the Administrative Offices (3301 North Torrey
Pines Court) on the P1 level from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointments are necessary.
TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals receiving
the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday, and individuals
screened on Wednesday, will need to return on Friday. Initiation of the
TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis B
immunization, serum draws, and Tetanus immunizations will be. To learn
