Janda Elected to AAAS
The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) Professor Kim Janda, Ely R. Callaway
Chair in Chemistry and member of The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology,
has been elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science (AAAS) "for fundamental studies in the areas of catalytic antibodies,
immunopharmacotherapy as related to cancer and drug addiction, and combinatorial
chemistry and resins for organic synthesis." Members of the AAAS, founded
in 1948, are elected based on their efforts to advance science or foster
applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.
SOF Awards Travel Fellowships
The Society of Fellows (SOF) has awarded travel fellowships to eight individuals
for outstanding research talks at the SOF Fall Symposium on October 28.
First-place winners, who receive a $600 travel award, are:
- Antje Gohla of the Bokoch lab;
- Brian Adair of the Yeager lab;
- Daniel Calarese of the Wilson lab;
- Roshan M. Kumar of the Joyce lab.
Second-place winners, who receive a $200 travel award, are:
- David Granville of the Gottlieb Lab;
- Dennis Wolan of the Wilson lab;
- Satyajit Mitra of the Schlaepfer lab;
- Keith Wilcoxen of the Ghadiri lab.
More Medals for TSRI Security Guard
TSRI Security Guard Karl Thorpe has done it again. The 64-year-old earned
a silver and a bronze medal in his age division in a track meet at Long
Beach last weekend. Earlier this year, he placed first in the 50 meter
and second in the 100 meter at a meet in San Diego, and third in both
the 60-meter and 100-meter dash in the California Senior Games State Championships.
"I'm having a ball with it," says Thorpe, who can now out-sprint his
41-year-old son.
Want to Change Your Benefits?
Open Enrollment for TSRI benefits plans will be held online Monday, November
4 through Friday, November 15. Open Enrollment is the annual opportunity
for participants to make changes to their benefit selections and, if eligible,
enroll (or re-enroll) in the healthcare and/or dependent care spending
accounts for 2003. Instructions on how to access the online system will
be mailed to all eligible participants' homes by November 4. There will
also be a kiosk available in Human Resources for employees who DO NOT
have computer access. During Open Enrollment, Human Resources will hold
a variety of benefits-related events, including a benefits fair (see below)
and several question-and-answer sessions with Human Resources staff. See

HR Hosts Benefits Fair
Human Resources will host a Benefits Fair on Wednesday, November 6, from
10 AM to 1 PM in the Immunology Building Galleria. Representatives from
each of the companies providing benefits, as well as Human Resources staff,
will be available to answer questions and provide information. Refreshments
will be served and a raffle will be held.
TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, and Serum Draws
On Monday, November 11, Wednesday, November 13, and Friday, November 15,
personnel from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to conduct
TB screenings, Hepatitis B immunizations, and serum draws. The clinics
will be conducted at the Administrative Offices (3301 North Torrey Pines
Court) on the P1 level from 11 AM to 2 PM on each of the three dates noted
above. No appointments are necessary.
TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals receiving
the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday; individuals
screened on Wednesday, will need to return on Friday. Initiation of the
TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis B
immunization and serum draws will be. To learn more about these programs,
