Businessman Frank Lowy Joins TSRI Board
At a recent meeting of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI)
Board of Trustees, businessman Frank Lowy was elected as the
newest member of the Board.
"In addition to being a leader in the business world, Mr.
Lowy is well known for his commitment to medical research
and educational programs," says TSRI President Richard Lerner.
"It is my pleasure to welcome him to the Board."
Born in Czechoslovakia in 1930, Lowy is executive chairman
and co-founder of Westfield Holdings Limited, a public company
which has been listed on the Australian Stock Exchange since
1960. The Westfield Group began in the late 1950s with the
construction of the first shopping center in Sydney, Australia.
Today, Westfield is one of the worlds leading shopping
center companies, having interests in 108 major regional centers
in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and New
Zealand.
Lowy is a member of the Board of Australias Central
Bank, the Reserve Bank of Australia. He is also a director
of UK media group, Daily Mail and General Trust.
He is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers,
which, in 1990, named him as one of only six "pioneers" of
the shopping center industry worldwide.
In 1999, the University of New South Wales conferred upon
him an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in recognition of his
contribution to business and the community. In 2001 he received
a Doctor Philosophiae Honoris Causa from the Tel Aviv University.
The University of New South Wales Australian Graduate
School of Management has named its library in his honor. The
Lowy School of Overseas Studies at Tel Aviv University was
also named in his honor.
In 1980, the Australian government honored Lowy by appointing
him as a Member of the Order of Australia. In, 1988 he was
honored again and became an Officer in the Order of Australia.
In 2000, he was awarded Australias highest civilian
honor being made a Companion in the General Division of the
Order of Australia.
This month, Lowy will receive a Gold Plate Award from the
Washington, D.C.-based Academy of Achievement.
