The sculpture is made of cylindrical glass segments cast, carved, and
polished by hand. Here we see the base segment unwrapped and upside
down on a protective sheet, ready to be put into place.
Glass is a mixture of melted and cooled silica, soda, and lime. Formed
by the violent heat of a volcano, a lightning strike, or a kiln, glass
is one of the most ancient and most elegant materials.
