John Mullen

Title: Security guard

Favorite Part of the Job: "I get a kick out of the students. They're all pretty smart, or they wouldn't be here."

Other Perks: "Good people to work for." "Good medical care" at Scripps Clinic.

Background: Service in the military: the army, the navy, and the marines. "I sailed as a civilian marine for 11 years." Positions included navy corpsman, ship's nurse, x-ray technician, and instructor.

Started at TSRI: 1990. "I've worked in different buildings and on all the shifts."

Extracurriculars: Extracurricular: Reading military history. Work on the yard and accomplishing other items on the "to do" list of his wife of 43 years. Visiting with his two daughters, two sons, and nine grandchildren—all boys. ("We're hoping for a girl next time.") Enjoying his four dogs—including Violet, a 4.2-pound midget chihuahua—and 17-year-old cat, Tommy.
