Datsun Hsia

Title: Research assistant in the Schlaepfer lab

Duties: Working with the principal investigator to do what needs to be done—from washing glassware to setting up experiments and interpreting data.

Started at TSRI: 1998

Background: B.S. in neurophysiology from University of California, Davis.

Career Goals: Becoming a scientist or physician. "Overall, the job has been a good experience. I've had a chance to learn what life as a scientist is like and what it takes to do well in the field.

Favorite Part of the Job: "When most of the experiments come together to help form a good story."

Biggest Challenge of the Job: "When the research isn't working out. The light gets dimmer at the end of the tunnel."

Greatest Accomplishment: "Getting my first publication out." Hsia is now an author on three scientific publications, with more in the pipeline. "I'm pretty satisfied as long as I'm being productive."

Extracurricular Activities: Competing in triathalons (including one Sunday, October 7 in Mission Bay), rockclimbing, backpacking, and fishing. "And my team won the doormat prize for coming in last in the Scripps Golf Tournament." Will the team enter again next year? "Absolutely. That was the best round of golf we ever played!"
