Bessie Huang, former associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Gilula's widow, concludes, "Bernie's contributions as a scientist and educator which you honor here today could only have been made in an environment that was at once encouraging, challenging, and supportive. To all of Bernie's colleagues, associates, and students at Scripps I personally want to thank you for the many roles you played in enriching Bernie's life and, through his life, the life of all of his family."
