A Monument to Knowledge and a Man The monument "The Flame of Knowledge" was dedicated at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) on September 10 in memory of Norton B. Gilula, the first dean of the graduate program and chair of the Department of Cell Biology. Standing over 15 feet tall, made of steel in a concrete base, and weighing in at almost 1,000 pounds, the sculpture was poured at a foundry, shaped in a mould, and polished by handa piece that took nearly a year to complete. Here Richard Lerner, president of TSRI, opens the dedication ceremony. |
