Three TSRI Researchers Make List of Most Cited Authors
TSRI investigators K.C. Nicolaou, K. Barry Sharpless, and Chi-Huey Wong
were included in a Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) list of
the world's most cited authors, comprising less than one half of one percent
of all publishing researchers. According to ISI, the list identifies "individuals,
departments, and laboratories that have made fundamental contributions
to the advancement of science and technology in recent decades." For more

Janda to Speak in Faculty Lecture Series
Professor Kim Janda, Department of Chemistry, will speak on "Biocatalysis,
Combinatorial Chemistry, and Immunopharmacotherapy," as part of the Faculty
Lecture Series on Wednesday, September 12 at 5 PM. The lecture will be
held in the Timken Amphitheater, Scripps Clinic, 10666 North Torrey Pines
Road.
English-as-a-Second-Language Classes Begin
A new English-as-a-second-language class will begin Tuesday, September
11. The class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Tuesday evenings in the west
conference room of the Immunology building. The price for three months
(12 classes) is $60.
Each intermediate-level English class is divided into speaking and listening;
idioms and vocabulary; and reading and writing. The instructor, Cassandra
Wadkins, uses movies, games, television shows, grammar books, songs, drawings,
and novels to teach standard American English. Have fun and learn English

Lunch and Learn: "Children and Safety on the Internet"
Sergeant Dave Jones of the San Diego Police Department Internet Crimes
Against Children Task Force will present "Children and Safety on the Internet"
as part of the ongoing Lunch and Learn seminar series. The event will
be held on Wednesday, September 19, noon to 1 PM, in the W.M. Keck Amphitheater
in the Beckman Center for Chemical Sciences. No registration is necessary.

Join the 2001 American Heart Walk
Join the Scripps team and support the 2001 American Heart Walk, to be
held Saturday, September 15 at the War Memorial Museum/San Diego Zoo at
Park Boulevard and Zoo Drive. Sign up as a team leader or a walker by
contacting Betsy Penberth, Volunteer Services, Scripps Clinic, at tie
line 354-2525 (do not dial "9" if calling from on campus). Opening ceremonies
begin at 7:30 AM; the walk, at 8 AM. Participants can choose between a
five-kilometer or one-kilometer course. The event, the proceeds from which
support research at TSRI and other institutions, will include food and
educational booths and live entertainment
TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, and Serum Draws
On Monday, September 17, Wednesday, September 19, and Friday, September
21, personnel from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to
conduct TB screenings, Hepatitis B immunizations, and serum draws. The
clinics will be conducted at the Administrative Offices (3301 North Torrey
Pines Court) on the P1 level from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointments are necessary.
TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals receiving
the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday; individuals
screened on Wednesday, will need to return on Friday. Initiation of the
TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis B
immunization and serum draws will be. To learn more about these programs,
