the current issue of Nature that describes a broad approach for designing
drugs to combat such problems as infections with antibiotic-resistant

TSRI Scientist Selected to Receive German Award
Associate Professor Matthias von Herrath has been named the 2001 George-Koehler
Laureate, a major award of the German Society of Immunology in honor of
Nobel laureate Georges Koehler. von Herrath's group is working to understand
the regulation of autoimmune and anti-viral responses. Its subsequent
goal is the development of paradigms that will selectively suppress autoimmune
diseases and lower the immunopathology that accompanies viral infections.
Three Students Win NSF Fellowships
Macromolecular and Cellular Structure and Chemistry (MCSC) student
John Craighead and Chemistry students Seth Horn and Anu Sawkar have won
National Science Foundation Fellowships, which are awarded on the basis
of merit and provide three years of support. Craighead is using cryo-electron
microscopy to solve structures of transcription initiation complexes.
Horn is developing a method for the synthesis, sequencing, and screening
of a combinatorial library of antimicrobial cyclic peptides. Sawkar is
using biophysical methods to study protein misfolding responsible for
disease states.
New York Times Covers Research of Schimmel, Schultz
On July 24, The New York Times published an article, "Scientists
Are Starting to Add Letters to Life's Alphabet," that discusses the work
of Professor Paul Schimmel and Professor Peter Schultz, among others.

Toastmasters Club Graduates First Member
On Monday, July 23, Administrative Assistant Kathy Sterling completed
her tenth speech in the Scripps Outstanding Speakers Toastmasters club,
making her the first in the group to attain the level of Competent Toastmaster.

Ethics in Science Course
TSRI's annual "Ethics in Science" Course will be presented by Thomas
Northrup, TSRI's Office of Patent Counsel, on Tuesday, September 11 and
Tuesday, September 18, 9 AM to noon in the Scripps Green Hospital's Valerie
Timken Amphitheater. All research associates/postdoctoral fellows who
have not previously attended the course at TSRI are required to register
for one of these courses. Registration forms and information will be mailed
to all new research associates. For further information, please contact
