Newspaper Gives TSRI High Marks in Medical, Biological Sciences
In addition to ranking The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) number one
in the physical sciences (which includes chemistry and physics), the British
newspaper "The Guardian" ranks TSRI's influence tenth in the world in
the medical sciences and eleventh in the biological sciences.
The rankings were based on how many papers faculty publish and how often
those papers are cited in other publications. The data used in the study
was provided by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), the Philadelphia-based
company that runs the Science and Social Science Index. For more information,

TSRI Professor Named to Committee of International AIDS Vaccine Initiative
Immunology Professor Dennis Burton has been named a member of the
Scientific Advisory Committee of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative,
which was established in 1996 to ensure the development of safe, effective,
accessible, preventive HIV vaccines for use throughout the world.
Enter News&Views Photo Contest
News&Views invites submissions to its Summer Photo Contest. Categories
include:
- TSRI campus;
- 2001 picnic;
- Science at TSRI;
- People at TSRI;
- San Diego and surrounding area.
Submit photos in any format, with a description of the subject and the
category(ies) you are entering, to Kevin Fung, e-mail kevin@scripps.edu
or mail drop TPC-20. The deadline is Friday, July 20. Call if you need
an extension. Winners will receive Padres tickets or tickets to San Diego's
Natural History Museum. Winning photos will be published in News&Views.
BioMedical Graphics Hosts Projector Demo
BioMedical Graphics will host a demonstration of the latest portable
Epson data/video projectors on Thursday, July 19, from 9 to 11 AM in the
Beckman Building's Keck Amphitheater. Four Epson projectors: PowerLite
models 50C, 715, 7700, and 8100 will be displayed. Epson's Representative,
Charles Barnston, will demonstrate the various projectors' features and
answer questions regarding computer/projector & Powerpoint compatibility
issues.
Lunch and Learn: "Change the World, Volunteer!"
Barbara Whitesides, corporate and public relations manager for the
Volunteer Center of San Diego County, will present "Change the World,
Volunteer!" as part of the onging Lunch and Learn seminar series, on Wednesday,
July 18, noon to 1 PM, in the W.M. Keck Amphitheater in the Beckman Building.
The seminar will cover volunteerism in the workplace, the Volunteer Center
of San Diego County, and its annual mobilizing event Hands On San Diego.

TB screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, and Serum Draws
On Monday, July 23, Wednesday, July 25, and Friday, July 27, personnel
from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to conduct TB screenings,
Hepatitis B immunizations, and serum draws. The clinics will be conducted
at the Administrative Offices (3301 North Torrey Pines Court) on the P1
level from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointments are necessary.
TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals receiving
the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday; individuals
screened on Wednesday, will need to return on Friday. Initiation of the
TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis B
immunization and serum draws will be. To learn more about these programs,

Look for the next issue of News&Views Monday, July 30. The deadline
for submissions to News&Views, which is published weekly during the academic
year and every other week during the summer, is Wednesday at noon for
the following Monday's publication.
