Department of Chemistry Professor Albert Eschenmoser will speak on “Chemical Etiology of nucleic Acid Structure on Wednesday, February 21 as part of the Concepts in Biology and Medicine Faculty Lecture Series. Molecular Biology Administrative Assistant Barbara Field recently published a novel, "The Deeper, The Bluer" (Quality Trade Paperback, December 2000), which has won endorsements from National Book Award winner Alice McDermott and HBO executive Bob Conte. In Field’s novel, set in San Diego, a 16-year-old girl thinks she is pregnant. She learns about motherhood—especially single motherhood—from a group of four women who gather around a community pool. Field has worked at TSRI since 1998. The winner of the Lenore Marshall and Van Rensselaer Prizes for writing from Barnard College and Columbia University, Field has published in "Salon," "The Atlanta Journal Constitution," and other venues. News&Views will not be published on Monday, February 19 due to President’s Day, a holiday for TSRI. Weekly publication will resume on Monday, February 26. The Employee and Graduate Student Counseling Department invites you to February's Lunch and Learn Seminar presented by Ginger Lipman Whisner, MFCC, "Are You Ready for Love & Marriage, but Don't Know How to Make it Happen?" The seminar will take place in the W.M. Keck Amphitheater in the Beckman Center for Chemical Sciences on Wednesday, February 14, from noon to 1 PM. The seminar will cover many topics including the "how-tos" of dating, how to meet and assess a mate who is right for you, and how to build a healthy relationship. No reservations are necessary. Jennifer O’Sullivan (formerly Boydston) joins the Office of Communications as communications coordinator. O’Sullivan, who holds a BA in comparative literature and an MFA in creative writing from San Diego State University, came to TSRI in 1994 as part of Director of Mass Spectrometry Gary Siuzdak’s group. O'Sullivan's new responsibilities will include helping to produce News&Views and coordinating TSRI's educational outreach efforts. On Monday, February 12, Wednesday, February 14, and Friday, February 16, personnel from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to conduct TB screenings, Hepatitis B immunizations, and serum draws. The clinics will be conducted at the Administrative Offices (3301 North Torrey Pines Court) on the P1 level from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointments are necessary. TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals receiving the TB screen on Monday, February 12, will need to return on Wednesday, February 14; individuals screened on Wednesday, February 14, will need to return on Friday, February 16. Initiation of the TB screening process will not be available on Friday, February 16, but Hepatitis B immunization and serum draws will be.
