LA JOLLA, CA—Eric Topol, MD, a leading physician-scientist and individualized medicine pioneer, is featured in the inaugural 2024 TIME100 Health list of most influential people working in global health. The list recognizes people who are spearheading efforts to improve health worldwide through scientific research and innovation.
Topol, professor, executive vice president, and the Gary and Mary West Chair of Innovative Medicine at Scripps Research, founded the Scripps Research Translational Institute, a center dedicated to transforming the practice of healthcare and tailoring medicine to the individual by leveraging the power of genomic and digital technologies. He is also a keen promoter of the adoption of artificial intelligence tools to accelerate biomedical discoveries and improve the practice of medicine.
Topol is recognized alongside U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, actor and Parkinson’s disease advocate Michael J. Fox and former President and Guinea worm eradication leader Jimmy Carter.
“I’m grateful to TIME magazine for this recognition and humbled to be among such an eminent group of scientists and healthcare innovators,” says Topol. “With the rise of artificial intelligence and other technologies, we’re living in the most transformative time yet in medicine. Not a day goes by when I’m not inspired by the advances and new knowledge that are gained in areas ranging from neurodegenerative disorders, chronic illnesses and infectious diseases. I’m honored to be part of this global scientific community.”
In addition to his clinical and research achievements, Topol is an avid science communicator, having written three bestselling books on the future of medicine. He also hosts the Ground Truths podcast where he interviews leading scientists on the latest medical advances and shares evidence-based science across multiple social media channels to hundreds of thousands of followers. He has published over 1,300 peer-reviewed articles, with more than 300,000 citations.
