A Statement from the Institute
June 06, 2020
Recently, an essay was published* in the journal Angewandte Chemie, authored by Tomas Hudlicky, that contains a litany of ideas that the leadership of Scripps Research finds offensive.
The mantle of free speech carries the weight that you are responsible for the views that you espouse and subject to direct criticism in response to the voicing of offensive ideas. The author espouses a plethora of negative and unsubstantiated views on diversity, inclusion, and mentorship that are antithetical to the environment that we promote at Scripps Research. We condemn, refute, and repudiate these statements and ideas. The journal has shown exceedingly poor judgement by allowing unsubstantiated, hurtful, and counterproductive statements to be legitimized through a forum that is purported to maintain the highest level of scholarship.
We join our voice with scientists around the world in outrage, and pledge to redouble our energy as advocates for diversity and inclusion in science. We owe our students and postdocs, our partners in shaping the future of education and research, nothing less.
