It is important to think about transportation prior to arrival in the U.S. If you choose a place to live that is walking or biking distance from Scripps Research, there is little or no cost. In general, Scripps Research campuses in California and Florida have minimal bus access, but with planning, you can live on a bus route that will get you to work with relatively low cost. However, if you need to use a car to get to work and you cannot share a ride with a colleague, plan to spend a substantial amount of money, not only in buying a car and paying for gas but in paying for car insurance, which is required in the U.S.
