Pre-Arrival Information

Prior to requesting the F-1 or J-1 visa document, review the following information to determine if you are considered a “new” or “transfer” student.

New student — A newly admitted student who is residing outside the U.S. can request a new initial F-1 or J-1 document. In addition, individuals who are currently in the U.S. in a status other than F-1 or J-1 are expected to request a new immigration document, depart the U.S., apply for an F-1 or J-1 visa at the U.S. Consulate abroad, and re-enter the U.S. with a student visa.

Transfer student  A newly admitted student who currently has a valid F-1 or J-1 SEVIS record at another U.S. institution should request a transfer of the electronic SEVIS record to Scripps Research. For more information regarding the transfer process and eligibility, please consult with the ISO and your current visa sponsor.
