TN Visa Status

International Services Office

Canadian and Mexican citizens seeking temporary entry to the U.S. to engage in activities at a professional level that appear on the list of occupations under Appendix 1603.D.1 of the NAFTA free trade agreement can enter the U.S. using a TN status. A letter of invitation from Scripps Research, detailing the offer of employment and how it meets the NAFTA requirements, is needed for entry to the U.S. in TN status. In addition, citizens of Mexico must apply for a TN visa stamp in their passport at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad (generally in Mexico). In general, the TN status for qualified applicants can be simpler to obtain than other work visas. TN status may be granted in increments of up to three years, with extensions also granted for up to three years. Unlike other statuses, TN status can be renewed indefinitely.
