Award-winning Science

Scripps Research scientists have been honored with numerous awards recognizing their pioneering research. We are home to six Nobel Prize winners, two MacArthur Fellows and six Wolf Prize awardees, and 30 of our tenured faculty are members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

In all, these awards recognize the unwavering commitment of Scripps Research scientists to advancing knowledge and improving human health.

Nobel Laureates

The Nobel Prize was established by businessman and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel, and is widely considered the highest honor in science and medicine. Beginning in 1901, the prizes are awarded each year to “those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.”

Wolf Prize Awardees

The acclaimed Wolf Prize is awarded to outstanding scientists and artists from around the world, for achievements in the interest of humanity and friendly relations among people.

MacArthur Fellows

The MacArthur Fellowship is granted to individuals who show exceptional creativity in their work and the prospect for more in the future.

Albert Lasker Award

The Lasker Awards program was created in 1945 by Albert and Mary Lasker to shine a spotlight on fundamental biological discoveries and clinical advances that improve human health, and to draw attention to the importance of public support of science.

Breakthrough Prize

The Breakthrough Prize recognizes the world’s top scientists working in the fundamental sciences – the disciplines that ask the biggest questions and find the deepest explanations.

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

The National Academies of Sciences (NAS), Engineering (NAE), and Medicine (NAM) represent one of the highest honors for scientists, recognizing achievement in science by election to membership, and providing science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.

Royal Society Fellows

The title of a Royal Society Fellow is a rare honor limited to top leaders in their fields. Key missions include promoting scientific research in the U.K. by fostering international cooperation, informing public policy, and improving communication between scientists and the public.

American Academy of Arts & Sciences

Members of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences represent today’s innovative thinkers. The society emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary study that draws on expertise from many fields of research and professional practice to address significant challenges.

Welch Award in Chemistry

The Robert A. Welch Award fosters and encourages basic chemical research and recognizes the value of chemical research contributions for the benefit of humankind as set forth in the will of Robert Alonzo Welch.

American Association for the Advancement of Science

As the world's largest multidisciplinary scientific society, AAAS Fellows are recognized by the AAAS charter as association members "whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished."
